Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife announced the birth of their first child on the social media platform Tuesday, along with pledging to donate the bulk of the couple's $45 billion fortune to humanitarian causes.

Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan welcomed a girl, Max, and also announced that they would donate 99 percent of their fortune to "advance human potential and promote equality for all children," Chan and the 31-year-old entrepreneur announced in a lengthy letter posted to Facebook detailing their plan for giving.

The couple plan to donate a billion a year for the next three years under the aegis of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to begin the charitable giving. The funds will be used for services and facilities such as schools, health centers and food programs.
In the letter, addressed to their daughter, Zuckerberg also announced his intention to serve as chief executive of the company for "many, many years to come."
Newark's public schools were among the first beneficiaries of Zuckerberg's largesse, receiving a $100 million gift that was announced on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2010.
