Froylan Lopez, 28, of Oak Street, has been charged with murder.
JERSEY CITY -- An arrest has been made in connection with a fatal stabbing on Monticello Avenue on Saturday night, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office announced.
Froylan Lopez, 28, of Oak Street, was arrested by the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office Homicide Unit with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department on Sunday, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced in a press release.
At about 10:15 Saturday night, Troy Brandon, 26, of Jersey City, was stabbed in the torso.
Last night's stabbing was the city's 23rd homicide of the year and its eighth since Nov. 12. Jersey City had a total of 23 homicides in 2014.
Based on a preliminary investigation, detectives believe Brandon had been coming to the aid of a victim who had just been assaulted when he was stabbed.
Brandon was transported to Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health where he was pronounced dead at 10:55 p.m.
Authorities said the assault victim suffered injuries and was taken to a local hospital, but details were not immediately available.
Lopez has been charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose. He is being held at Hudson County jail on a $1 million cash only bail.
