JERSEY CITY -- Dozens of firefighters are battling a three-alarm fire that is ripping through a three-story, brick building in Jersey City with a hair braiding salon on the first floor and apartments on the upper floors.
At 3:18 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to 346 Communipaw Ave., where the blaze is believed to have started between the first and second floors, according to city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill.
Occupants of the building, as well as occupants in adjacent buildings at 344 and 348 Communipaw Ave., were safely evacuated, Morrill said. It's not known how many people have been displaced.
The fire, whose cause is still under investigation, is currently contained to 346 Communipaw Ave., she said.
Falling debris from the building struck a firefighter, knocking him out, Morrill said. The firefighter, whose current condition isn't known, has been taken to the Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health for treatment.
Over seven fire trucks and multiple police vehicles and ambulances were at the scene.
