Jeffrey A. Afflitto, 31, of Pompton Plains, has been charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter and second-degree death by auto, police say
WAYNE -- A Pompton Plains man who was charged with driving under the influence in a fatal October accident now faces more charges, NorthJersey.com reports.
The 31-year-old, Jeffrey A. Afflitto, has been charged with first-degree aggravated manslaughter and second-degree death by auto, the Wayne Police Department said in a press release Saturday, according to the report.
Afflitto is accused of driving drunk on the Newark Pompton Turnpike on Oct. 22 and smashing into an SUV head-on in Wayne after swerving into northbound traffic.
The 63-year-old driver of the GMC Jimmy, Paul J. Amarose, of Oak Ridge, was seriously injured in the crash and died a few hours later in the hospital, police said.
Shortly before the accident, authorities say Afflitto crashed his 2013 Acura TSX into a parked car on the turnpike in Pequannock and fled the scene after police arrived.
Afflitto was previously charged with leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, failure to obey a police officer's directions and driving under the influence, police said.
