JERSEY CITY - The American Red Cross assisted six families displaced by a three-alarm fire Saturday at their homes on Communipaw Avenue.
Nineteen people in six families received emergency assistance from the Red Cross Disaster Action Team for temporary lodging, food and clothing as needed, as well as comfort kits containing personal care items, according to a statement by the Red Cross.
Volunteers remain available to the families for support, counseling and referrals to local agencies that may provide long-term assistance during their recovery.
Dozens of firefighters battled the fire that ripped through a three-story, brick building Saturday afternoon, with a hair braiding salon on the first floor and apartments on the upper floors.
The fire was declared under control at 5:12 p.m. Saturday, according to city spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill.
Occupants of 346 Communipaw Ave., as well as those in adjacent buildings at 344 and 348 Communipaw Ave., were safely evacuated, Morrill said.
Falling debris from the building struck a firefighter, knocking him out, Morrill said. The firefighter, was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health for treatment.
More than seven fire trucks and multiple police vehicles and ambulances were at the scene.
