SCOTCH PLAINS -- A township man who robbed a bank in Green Brook and another in Bridgewater was arrested after he attempted to rob a third bank in Scotch Plains on Sunday, according to Police Chief Brian Mahoney.

Mahoney said that around 2 p.m. police were told Andrew D. Miller, 21, a Scotch Plains resident, was suspected to have robbed two TD Banks - one in Green Brook and one in Bridgewater - earlier that day.

Upon receiving that notice, Mahoney said police stationed units at the TD Bank on Park Avenue in Scotch Plains, and around 2:45 p.m., Officer Zach Von Langen saw a man matching Miller's description approaching the bank.

Langen radioed for assistance and when officers approached Miller he fled on foot across Route 22, Mahoney said.

Mahoney said Miller was eventually tracked by the Scotch Plains police K-9 unit to his address on Donato Circle in the Reserve apartment complex just behind Route 22.

Officers believed Miller was hiding in his home and the area around the complex was secured and the Union County SWAT team was notified, Mahoney said. He said when the SWAT team was able to enter the home, Miller was not there.

At the same time, an individual matching Miller's description was reported running from the complex, heading west through the creek in the county's Route 22 baseball field and park, the chief said.

Mahoney said around 5:40 p.m. Miller was found attempting to hide at the Subway on Route 22 west, where he was taken into custody.

Miller was charged with fourth-degree resisting arrest in Scotch Plains and two counts of robbery from the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office for the incidents in Green Brook and Bridgewater. Miller's bail was set at $75,000.

Mahoney said police received assistance in containing the area and searching for Miller with mutual aid from Union County Sheriff's Department and Warren and Hillsborough police.

Mahoney said Miller was initially identified as the suspect after a vehicle in the Green Brook and Bridgewater robberies was linked to him. That vehicle was found on Mountain Avenue in the vicinity of Park Avenue, the chief said.

Miller was known to Scotch Plains police and has been arrested several times previously, most recently when he allegedly stole cash from the Lukoil on Route 22 in November.
