BMW recovered in Newark after owner was told she would be shot, police said
UNION -- Police arrested an Irvington man who was one of two people who took a BMW near the Irvington border Sunday night, the department said in a statement.
The victim, a 24-year-old Flemington woman, told police she was visiting a friend near 1775 Manor Drive shortly before 11 p.m. after finishing some holiday shopping. As the woman walked towards the friend's home, two men approached her from behind and grabbed her arm before one of them said he would shoot her. The man took the victim's backpack, purse and keys and both fled in her 2010 BMW 328i, police said.
Police at the scene found the car on 18th Avenue in Newark, where it was parked in front of American Fried Chicken. Sgt. Michael Wittevrongel and officers Chris Trejo and Dante Rastelli, along with other officers, helped catch one of the suspects near the car. The second suspect was also found but he had fled on foot and was last seen near an abandoned building on Springfield Avenue, police said.
The victim positively identified the apprehended man, 26-year-old Allante Hicks of Irvington, who was charged with armed robbery and theft and was being held at the Union jail pending transfer to the Union County Jail. Hicks was being held on $100,000 bail.
Det. Anthony Lagoa is attempting to determine the identity of the second suspect. Anyone with information is being asked to call the Union Police Department Detective Bureau at 908-851-5030.
