Barbie is now 'curvy,' 'petite' and 'tall'

Barbie's got a new look -- and it doesn't have anything to do with her job, boyfriend or car.

New Barbie dolls, unveiled Thursday, come in three different body types -- "curvy," "petite" and "tall," as well as seven skin tones. They also have different-sized feet, and as a result of their different body designs, different clothes. Going forward, these dolls will be sold alongside "original" Barbie.

This change reflects changing attitudes towards body image, but is also partially due to flailing sales -- in 2014, dolls from the Disney movie "Frozen" (namely Elsa dolls) surpassed Barbie for the most in-demand girls' toy for holiday gifts.

The Time magazine story "Barbie's Got a New Body," published Thursday, goes behind the scenes at Mattel, covering company thinking about redesigning the doll as well as focus group responses to the new toys.

"Hello, I'm a fat person, fat, fat, fat," one 6-year-old-girl said, when presented with the curvy Barbie.

Tania Missad, who runs a Mattel research team, said such feedback is part of why the company wanted to change the doll in the first place.

"For me, it's these moments where it just really sets in how important it is we do this," she told Time. "Over time I would love it if a girl wouldn't snicker and just think of it as another beautiful doll."

What do you make of the new Barbie? Vote in the informal poll below and tell us your thoughts in the comments section.
