JERSEY CITY -- Arson investigators from the city's fire department are looking into the cause of last night's fire on Fulton Avenue, where a homeless man was found injured and the front porch splattered with blood.
"A boy set the curtains on fire," said a woman who popped into 214 Fulton Ave. this morning, where the front windows were smashed and the wall beneath one window was charred, as was the baseboard heater. The woman said nothing further.
Firefighters responding to the 11:30 p.m. fire found flames on the first floor of the two-story, two-unit building and they also found a homeless man with injuries suffered during an assault, Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said this afternoon.
The man was taken to Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health for treatment. A second homeless person believed to have injured the man is thought to have fled the building, Morrill said.
The fire was under control in less than 20 minutes but one fire captain suffered an injury and was treated at the scene, Morrill said.
The first floor of the building was largely devoid of furniture and items were scattered all over the floor. The furnace was toppled against a wall and a rear bedroom showed signs of a previous fire.
