Piechocki, a real estate agent who previously spent 13 years working as a special education teacher in Jersey City, is the third trustee to resign from the nine-member board within a two-month span.
BAYONNE -- City school board trustee Christopher Piechocki resigned from his post effective immediately earlier today, according to board secretary Gary Maita.
Piechocki, a real estate agent who previously spent 13 years working as a special education teacher in Jersey City, is the third trustee to resign from the nine-member board within a two-month span.
Neither he nor board president Joseph Broderick could be immediately reached for comment about the reasons behind the resignation.
With Piechocki's departure, the board now only has two members -- appointed trustees Mikel Lawandy and Theodore Garelick -- who have served on the board for more than a month and a half.
The remaining members -- Broderick, Ava Finnerty, Christopher Munoz and board vice president Denis Wilbeck -- took office last month, along with Piechocki, as part of the first wave of trustees to be elected in over 35 years.
Piechocki's time on the board began in Oct. 2014, when Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis appointed him to a vacant, unexpired term. That appointment was made before the city's appointed board was converted into an elected board by referendum the following month.
Piechocki then successfully ran in last November's election to stay on the board, finishing third in an eight-candidate race for three open three-year terms behind teachers-union-backed candidates Broderick and Finnerty. His term was slated to expire on Dec. 31, 2018.
Maita said Piechocki's resignation will set off a new vacancy application round on top of the ongoing application rounds for two other vacancies stemming from former board vice president Ava Mitchell's resignation on Dec. 31 and former board president Will Lawson's resignation on Jan. 8.
