SADDLE BROOK -- A New York City man was arrested after he crashed his car into a Paramus home following an early morning car chase Saturday, police said.
Police pulled over a black Nissan Altima at around 4:30 a.m. Saturday after it went through a red light on Outwater Lane and Westminister Place, according to a press release from Saddle Brook Police Chief Robert Kugler.
As the officer approached the car, the driver sped off into Rochelle Park. Police pursued the car through Rochelle Park and into Paramus, where the driver lost control and crashed into a home at the intersection of Fairview Avenue and Spring Valley Road, police said.
The driver the got out of the car got and fled on foot. Officers gave chase and apprehended him a short time later, said Kugler.
Marlon Vancooten, 25, of Brooklyn, NY was arrested and later charged with several motor vehicle violations and eluding police.
"We were lucky to have run into him at a time when there was very little to no traffic on the roadways," Kugler said in a statement.
A passenger in the car at the time, a female acquaintance of Vancooten's, was released pending a further investigation.
The Paramus Fire Department was called to the scene after the Nissan started to smoke and catch fire, which was extinguished without incident.
Police determined the car was a rental and said the two could face charges from items found inside the car, Kugler said.
