NEW BRUNSWICK -- Rutgers University police said they were investigating an assault early Saturday in the city that that sent one person to an area hospital.

The attack was reported around 3:30 a.m. after three male assailants approached the unspecified number of victims at Mine and Union streets, campus police Chief Kenneth Cop said in a statement.

Cop said the three started hitting the victims after "a brief verbal exchange" and fled the area. No weapons were used in the assault and it did not appear to be a robbery attempt, the chief added.

One victim suffered a non-life threatening injury and was later released from the hospital, according to Cop.

Police said the victims were affiliated with the University, but did provide further information.

The chief asked anyone with information to contact the Rutgers University Police Department Detective Bureau at 848-932-8025.
