A water main was ruptured Tuesday morning in Kearny. Watch video
KEARNY -- Work began Thursday night to restore water service to a large part of the town following a water main break Tuesday morning, water company Suez said in an electronic alert.
A 30-inch main at Central and Pennsylvania avenues was ruptured around 10 a.m. Tuesday while a contractor was performing work, Suez said. There was no immediate interruption in service and workers have been on scene repairing the break since Tuesday.
In order to complete repairs, however, water service was shut off in the area around 6 p.m. Thursday night. The interruption was expected to last until 6 p.m. Friday, Kearny police said.
The break occurred in an area with several businesses, many of which are closed for the night, police said. Tankers were on hand to provide potable water and affected customers were notified of the scheduled interruption in service, police and Suez said.
A spokesman for Suez did not immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday night.
