EAST GREENWICH TWP. -- Residents are collecting items for a township family that lost everything after a two-alarm fire ripped through their house Saturday night and killed three family pets.
Two firefighters were injured while battling the blaze.
Homeowner Susan Wright thanked the firefighters and EMTs who responded to the fire. She also voiced appreciation to the community for helping her family.
"I just want to thank everyone for their outpouring of generosity and kindness," she said.
The fire occurred Saturday at 11:13 p.m. on the 500 block of Kings Highway. According to Wright, the house dates back more than a century.
Arriving firefighters found heavy fire coming from the first and second floors of the house, according to Chief Rob Gould III of East Greenwich Fire and Rescue.

According to Tony Chiaradonna, who lives across the street from the fire, he woke up to the commotion and smelled smoke. Initially, he was worried the smoke was coming from his home, but then saw emergency lights outside his window and the house across the street ablaze.
One firefighter fell through the floor, but was rescued by firefighters in the house and a Rapid Intervention Crew that stands by at fire scenes in case assistance is needed.
The firefighter was taken to a nearby hospital for a back injury. He has seen been released and is home recovering from the incident, Gould said.
The second firefighter suffered an eye injury and was treated on the scene.
The blaze was declared a two-alarm fire and extra assistance was brought in. Due to the floors being damaged within the home, firefighters used ladder hoses to douse the blaze.
Authorities rescued two dogs and a cat from the fire, but could not save two additional cats and another dog from the flames.
The American Red Cross New Jersey Region is assisting the family with food, clothing and lodging.
A local collection has already begun for Wright and her family. Platt's Farm Market has been identified as a drop-off point for toiletries, clothing, gift cards or anything else to offer.
