The South Philadelphia shooting was reported Saturday.

PHILADELPHIA -- A cat found dead in South Philadelphia over the weekend had been shot, Pennsylvania SPCA officials said Monday, adding that the society is now offering a $1,000 reward for information related to the incident.

The discovery was made near the 500 block of Cantrell Street and was reported to the SPCA by a nearby resident.

The cat's body was recovered by PSPCA Humane Law officers. A necropsy done at the PSPCA's Erie Avenue headquarters reportedly revealed that the animal had been shot, which ultimately caused its death.

Gillian Kocher, public relations director for the organization, said Monday that the SPCA isn't revealing the type of weapon used, as it remains part of the active investigation.

The $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of those involved in the shooting.

Readers with information in this case are asked to contact the SPCA's Cruelty Hotline at (866) 601-SPCA. Tips may also be left anonymously.
