The other worker, whose condition was upgraded from "serious" to "stable" last night, was released this morning, according to Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health.

BAYONNE -- One of the two workers seriously injured after yesterday's explosion on the city's former Military Ocean Terminal remains in "critical" condition, a hospital spokesman said late this morning.

The other worker, whose condition was upgraded from "serious" to "stable" last night, was released this morning, Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health spokesman Mark Rabson said.

At 9:01 a.m. yesterday, workers were conducting a "pressure test of a gas line" on Chosin Few Way near Goldsborough Drive when a "small explosion" happened, according to city police.

Two police officers who were at the scene at the time were taken to Bayonne Medical Center "as a precaution," police said, and were released yesterday without any injuries, Bayonne Medical Center spokesman Jarrod Bernstein said.

Police had reported that a third worker was taken to Bayonne Medical Center for minor injuries; but Bernstein later said that the worker was taken to University Hospital in Newark. Without the worker's name, University Hospital said it would have difficulty confirming that new information.

This morning, Chosin Few Way was clear and passable. The equipment and vehicles that were at the site of the incident yesterday have been moved east, just off the roadway.

PSE&G said yesterday that a contractor working for PSE&G was installing a new gas main and testing the main with air when the explosion occurred. There was no natural gas flowing through the main at the time of the incident, according to PSE&G.

Bayonne police have corroborated that account, adding that the gas line "failed" while it was being tested with pressurized air. Police have said there is "no danger of any gas leak or additional risk."

PSE&G said this morning that the incident remains under investigation.
