Friends of Hancock House reenact the massacre of local patriots during commemoration.

HANCOCKS BRIDGE --  Historical figures came back to life at the Hancock House in Salem County during a commemoration of the March 21, 1778 massacre of local patriots Saturday.

Friends of Hancock House reenacted the massacre of local patriots, killed by the British at the Hancock House grounds in downtown Hancocks Bridge.

Dressed in 1700s costumes, these late patriots traveled to the present day and roamed the grounds of the Hancock House to educate and commemorate the 1778 massacre.

The Hancock House traces back to 1675 when a lawyer and Quaker from England came to Salem County. This man was John Fenwick.

Fenwick established the first permanent English Settlement -- Fenwick's Colony -- and then founded Salem.

The Hancock House was purchased from Fenwick by William Hancock, and made its way down through relatives and remained in the family.

Then in 1778, roughly 300 troops attacked the Hancock House killing 10 people, and injuring five.

The legacy of the Hancock House lives on with the commemoration and celebration of history in Salem County.
