WAYNE -- A Clifton man fought with police and threw bodily fluids while he was being arrested Saturday after being found in a stolen car, department spokesman Capt. Laurence Martin said.

Officer Skylar Cauceglia was responding to a report of a stolen Acura around noon when he spotted the car on Alps Road near Soldatovic Court. Cauceglia made a U-turn, activated his lights and caught up to the car, which turned into a driveway on Rockledge Terrace.

A passenger in the car, Traci Magliaccio, 23, of Bloomfield, complied with police orders but the driver, 18-year-old Michael Doremus of Clifton, leapt into the back seat and appeared to be looking for something underneath and inside his pants, Martin said.

Cauceglia pulled Doremus from the car and was struggling with him as other officers arrived and assisted with Doremus' arrest. Three bags of marijuana and a hypodermic needle were recovered once the two were in handcuffs, Martin said.

At the police station, Doremus allegedly behaved "irrationally," spitting and throwing fluids while resisting arrest, as well as threatening police, Martin said. He also allegedly attacked Cauceglia while being searched and had to be restrained again. Doremus was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center for evaluation before he was returned to Wayne.

Doremus, who was being held on $25,000 bail, has been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, theft of movable property, throwing bodily fluids, obstruction of justice, eluding, possession of marijuana and possession of hypodermic needles. He was also issued motor-vehicle summonses.

Magliaccio was charged with receiving stolen property and released pending a court appearance.
