A car driven by a Hamilton woman went down an embankment and struck a tree.
LAWRENCE -- Two Hamilton women were injured, one seriously, when their car left Interstate 295 Thursday afternoon and struck a tree, the state police said.
A car driven by Norma Avila, 45, was northbound when it left the highway at mile marker 66.9 in Lawrence at about 1:50 p.m., state police spokesman Sgt. Jeff Flynn said.
Avila was driving in the left lane but the car went off the right side, down an embankment and struck a tree, Flynn said. She was trapped in the car and had to be cut free by firefighters.
Avila suffered serious injuries and was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton.
A passenger, Ana Espailate, 66, also of Hamilton, was injured but not trapped, Flynn said. She was also taken to the Trenton hospital.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The cause is under investigation, Flynn said.
Career firefighters from Lawrence and Hamilton cut Avila from her car.
