An Elizabeth man was found guilty of robbing a security guard at an Elizabeth freight company and stealing more than $400.
ELIZABETH -- A 27-year-old city man faces up to 10 years in prison after being convicted of robbing and beating a security guard at a freight company in 2014.
A Superior Court jury convicted Carl Dixon of second-degree robbery and simple assault after deliberating for several hours over two days following a three-week trial before state Superior Court Judge Robert Mega, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace Park said in a statement.
Union County Assistant Prosecutor Stacey Zyriek, who tried the case, said Dixon attacked the guard on July 25, 2014.
The victim was just starting his shift at a freight company on 6th Street in Elizabeth, and as he walked from the corner store to his guard booth, Dixon called out to him, Zyriek said.
He said Dixon followed the victim into his guard booth and demanded money. When the victim didn't immediately comply, Dixon punched him and choked him. After grabbing more than $400 and all of the victim's personal identification, Dixon fled, the prosecutor said.
Zyriek said Dixon was arrested a week later following a tip from a concerned citizen.
Dixon faces a maximum 10-year prison term for a second-degree crime when he is sentenced June 3.
