Robert McClain, 47, of Trenton, has also been charged with third-degree theft
EAST WINDSOR -- The man who was arrested in the carjacking of a 78-year-old woman has also been charged with robbing a supermarket the same day, police said.
Police identified Robert McClain, 47, of Trenton, as the man who robbed a cashier late Monday, charging him with third-degree theft.
The incident occurred around 11:38 p.m. in the East Windsor ShopRite on Route 130 North. Police say he entered the store and attempted to buy a soda. When the cashier opened the register, McClain leaned over the counter and took an unknown amount of cash before running toward the exit. Police say a witness reportedly heard him tell a customer who had chased after him, "Don't grab me, I'll shoot you."
McClain also faces carjacking, receiving stolen property and theft charges for allegedly ripping a 78-year-old woman from her car in the Lawrence Shopping Center hours earlier.
The woman had just loaded the groceries in her car around and was in the driver's seat when McClain approached. Police say he leaned in and demanded her keys and when she refused, he grabbed her wrists and threw her from the car. He then drove away in her car.
McClain was arrested Tuesday night in Lawrence's Avalon Apartments after police spotted the woman's car in the parking lot and set up surveillance.
