JERSEY CITY -- Seventy years ago, Jackie Robinson played his first game of baseball.

To celebrate Robinson's accomplishments, the Department of Recreation and Office of Cultural Affairs organized a commemoration family day at Bayside Park this afternoon.

On April 18, 1946, Robinson played his first game with the Montreal Royals against the Jersey City Giants at Roosevelt Stadium. The following year, he went on to break Major League Baseball's color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Dozens of children played in a bounce house and participated in baseball clinics throughout the afternoon as part of the event. Artist James Fiorentino displayed some of his paintings he's made to commemorate Robinson.

Scroll through the gallery above for photos from today's event taken by freelance photographer Rich McCormack.
