The man previously settled a lawsuit against Roselle Park police officers over an incident that happened in 2012.
KENILWORTH -- When a Roselle Park man driving a stolen car saw he was being pulled over, he sped down the road and hit a vehicle going the opposite direction, police say.
James Redington was driving the Ford Escape on Galloping Hill Road on Tuesday when an officer realized the car had been stolen and tried to stop it, Det. Michael Scanielo said.
Redington then accelerated and struck a vehicle coming toward him at the intersection with Freeman Circle in Union, the detective said.
Kenilworth police took Redington into custody and sent him to UMDNJ Hospital in Newark for treatment of moderate injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured, Scanielo said.
The owner of the Ford Escape had reported it stolen out of Kenilworth on April 26.
Redington was charged with eluding police, receiving stolen property and assault by auto. He was released, pending a scheduled court appearance.
In 2013, Redington and two friends filed a lawsuit against Roselle Park police, alleging officers had entered their apartment in December 2012 by falsely claiming they had a search warrant. Redington got $5,000 when the borough settled the lawsuit the next year.
Attempts to reach Redington for comment on Tuesday were unsuccessful.
