One of a pair of truckers allegedly tried to use fake insurances card to retrieve his impounded vehicle on two consecutive days.
FORT LEE -- Authorities accused Jean Lafortune of, among other offenses, using a fake insurance card when he was arrested May 10. Less than a week later, Lafortune allegedly presented yet another phony insurance card as he was trying to pick up the tractor trailer impounded during his previous arrest, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.
And then on Tuesday, cops say, he tried once more to use fraudulent documents.
Lafortune was at the George Washington Bridge command post Monday trying to retrieve the vehicle when he was spotted by one of the Port Authority officers who had arrested him last week. That same officer arrested him again Monday when he examined the insurance card Lafortune presented and determined it was fake, the Port Authority said.
Lafortune was arrested a third time in one week when he once more returned to the command post seeking to release his truck from impound on Tuesday. This time, police say, he presented an insurance document bearing the name "Dean Callahan." Authorities determined Lafortune used that name to fraudulently obtain insurance documents.
Lafortune, 37, of Florida, was charged last week with using a fraudulent license plate and VIN tag to evade an estimated six thousand dollars in EZ Pass tolls.
