The fire started in a bedroom.
GARFIELD -- A fire destroyed a multi-family house Tuesday night, a Garfield fire official said.
The fire appears to have started in a first-floor bedroom of the Cedar Street house, Gerald Walis, fire official for the city, said.
Officials have not determined the exact cause. One woman was home cooking in the 2.5-story house when the fire started.
No one was injured. The fire displaced about eight people, Walis said.
Firefighters doused the flames on the first and second floors quickly, but ran into trouble when the fire got into the walls of the attic. The fire took about 90 minutes to bring under control. No other homes were damaged.
Garfield received mutual aid from fire departments in Elmwood Park, Saddle Brook, Wallington, Paramus and Rochelle Park.
The fire does not appear to be suspicious, Walis said.
