Officials at the hospital said they determined the project's finances and feasibility were too uncertain to move forward
PATERSON -- St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson has announced it is dropping plans for a 14-story hotel and conference center, according to an account in The Record and the Paterson Press.
The project had been considered a major effort in the redevelopment of the city and the South Paterson neighborhood, and both Mayor Joey Torres and Councilman Andre Sayeh expressed disappointment, the newspaper reported.
Officials at the Catholic hospital, who announced the decision Tuesday afternoon, said a "due diligence" review found the project's finances and feasibility to be too risky and uncertain, according to The Record.
The decision came just a few weeks after the city council voted preliminary approval of a tax break for the project's nonprofit developer, Medical Missions for Children, which has spent years planning the project and had threatened to sue the hospital for the millions it has spent on those plans, the Record reported.
