Suspect arrested after shots were heard early Sept. 12

PATERSON -- A city man faces a federal weapons charge following his arrest earlier this month, Police Director Jerry Speziale said in a statement Tuesday.

Detectives from the Ceasefire Unit heard shots fired early on the morning of Sept. 12 near Jefferson Street, then a search began in the 4th Ward after police learned that a black Dodge sedan was involved in the incident. The car was quickly located at Rosa Parks Boulevard and Harrison Street and stopped, leading to the arrest of a passenger, 22-year-old city man Kadeem "K'Rock" Coleman. Coleman was in possession of a .45-caliber semi-automatic pistol, Speziale said.

Following Coleman's arrest, the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms also investigated, eventually charging him with felony possession of a firearm. If convicted, Coleman faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

"Working side by side with the ATF and Passaic County Prosecutor's Office will aid us in our efforts to rid the city of guns and hold those responsible accountable," Speziale said.  "The Paterson Police Department looks forward to our continued partnership and we thank the ATF, U.S. Attorney's Office and Prosecutor's Office for their continued support and tireless efforts in removing and identifying the flow of illegal weapons."
