BAYONNE -- A two-alarm fire that broke out this morning at a vacant, 2.5-story building in Bayonne was controlled within an hour with no injuries, according to Bayonne Fire Chief Greg Rogers.

At 9:18 a.m., city firefighters were dispatched to 83 West 33rd St. on the report of alarms sounding from that location, and upon arrival, saw smoke coming from the building, Rogers said.

Rogers said the firefighters forced their way inside the structure, at which point they found that the fire was coming from the rear basement and had spread to the rear porch on the first floor.

The building appeared to be undergoing renovations, and "extensive overhaul efforts" were required for firefighters to get access to "smoldering pockets" of fire in a shower area in the basement, the chief said.

A fire investigator later confirmed that the fire started in that area, and the initial finding regarding the cause is "possible electrical failure," Rogers said.
