It was while investigating a sexual assault case in which Miguel A. Collazo was a suspect this past summer, information surfaced that he may have attacked a young girl in 2002, according to investigators.

Collazo, 45, of Penns Grove, is the subject of two Salem County grand jury actions last week.

He was indicted on a third-degree charge of endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree sexual contact and fourth-degree sexual contact, according to court records.

Those charges stem from an incident in June of this year in Penns Grove where a 13-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by Collazo, investigators said.

That incident took place on the same street where Collazo lived, but not at his home, investigators said.

In a second action against Collazo, the Salem County grand jury indicted him on a first-degree charge of aggravated sexual assault, a second-degree charge of sexual assault and a second-degree charge of endangering the welfare of a child.

Those charges come from an incident which is alleged to have taken place between May 1, 2002 and Sept. 1, 2002 in Salem City, according to court records. The alleged victim in that case, more than a decade old, was a girl who was age 9 at the time, investigators said.

At the time of Collazo's arrest on June 18 this year, Salem County Prosecutor John T. Lenahan said that while investigating the alleged assault in Penns Grove, authorities learned of the Salem City incident.

Despite the alleged Salem assault allegedly taking place 13 years ago, laws were changed in 2002 to allow for no statute of limitations in sexual assault cases.

He remains in the Salem County Correctional Facility on $200,000 bail.
