WAYNE -- An Osceola Road house was left with extensive damage after a blaze late Wednesday, township police said.

A passing off-duty police department crossing guard spotted an orange glow coming from the house and heard breaking glass from the heat shortly before 10 p.m., Capt. Laurence Martin said. The crossing guard called 9-1-1 and police responded within minutes.

Police found the house was unoccupied and the owner lived in the neighborhood, according to Martin.

Township fire companies doused the flames and cleared the scene shortly before midnight, police said. There were no injuries.

The fire appeared to have started in the kitchen-area of the ranch house, Martin added. An investigation was ongoing.

Crews worked at the blaze while other township firefighters were assisting at a massive apartment blaze in Passaic.
