Police are looking for a single suspect in a shooting last night that left a man with multiple gunshot wounds, Bayonne Police Chief Drew Niekrasz confirmed.

BAYONNE -- Police are looking for a single suspect in a shooting last night that left a man with multiple gunshot wounds, Bayonne Police Chief Drew Niekrasz confirmed.

"A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was pursued west on 17th Street between Avenue C and Kennedy Boulevard after being fired upon by a yet-to-be-identified male who fled the scene on foot," Niekrasz said in a statement.

Police could not offer a more detailed description of the suspect this afternoon.

The victim -- a 33-year-old Bayonne man -- was shot once in abdomen and once in the arm, according to Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis, and is currently in "stable" condition at the Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health, a hospital spokesman said.

In line with previous reports, Niekrasz said police were called to the area of 17th Street and Kennedy Boulevard at 7:26 p.m. on the report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers found the injured victim at the corner of Andrew Street and Kennedy Boulevard.

A resident in the area told a Jersey Journal photographer there were 5-10 shots fired. There were at least 13 evidence markers in the area and a parked car had a bullet hole in it, Journal photographer Jesse Brothers said.

According to police radio transmissions, the person wanted in the shooting was wearing some sort of headwear to cover his face and discarded it after the shooting. Police recovered a ski mask early in their investigation last night, and a cell phone was also recovered at 17th Street and Kennedy Boulevard, according to transmissions.

The shooting remains under investigation, Niekrasz said.
