BAYONNE -- Firefighters put out a two-alarm blaze at a closed daycare center in Bayonne last night, according to radio transmissions.

The fire started at around 6:30 p.m at the one-story building at 128 Kennedy Boulevard, according to transmissions. No one appeared to be inside the structure, but some neighbors had to be evacuated from their homes.

"We have flames coming from the roof from the backyard," one emergency responder said. Another responder said there was "heavy fire from the rear."

The Bayonne Fire Department couldn't immediately be reached for this report. It's not known what the cause of the fire was, or whether there were any injuries.

Neighbors said today that the fire appeared to have been controlled within 30 minutes. Firefighters remained at the scene for several hours, neighbors said.
