ATLANTIC CITY -- A 20-year-old man was "unlawfully" killed by Atlantic City police last year, his family alleges in a civil lawsuit.
Shawn Brown of Atlantic City was armed when police shot him in the area of Route 30 and Pennsylvania Avenue on Sept. 9, 2014. The suit alleges that none of the three plain-clothed detectives on the scene sought medical attention for Brown in a "diligent" fashion, according to PressofAtlanticCity.com.
The suit filed in U.S. District Court contends Brown died because his constitutional and civil rights were violated. It names the police department and the city as defendants.
Brown was pronounced dead at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center following the early-afternoon shooting.
Police said a semi-automatic weapon was found at the scene.
Brown's mother was among dozens to attend a rally and memorial service for her son on Wednesday, the one year anniversary of his death.
