MORRISTOWN -- Visitors to Fosterfields Living Historical Farm have two new horses to transport them back in time.
King and Major, both male Percheron horses, were shown for the first time at the Morris County farm Thursday.
"Anything a modern day farmer does with a tractor, that's what they will be doing," Farmer Chris Alessi said. "They will power our machines, that's were horse power comes from."
Alessi said the 7- and 8-year-old horses will plow fields, pull wagons and skid logs, among other tasks that work horses did back in the day.
Taller, bigger and with more muscles than riding horses, King and Storm resemble the horses made popular in Budweiser commercials.
The horses, who arrived last week, went trotting through the snow the day after the blizzard, said Alessi, just like one of the beer commercials.
"I let them out and they were completely covered in snow, they love the snow," said Alessi. "Horses have warmer blood then humans, so they were okay."
The 1,800-pound horses were purchased from upstate New York and previously worked together on an Amish farm, Alessi said.
They will take the place of Calvin and Hobbes, tan-colored Belgian draft horses, who are retiring at the age of 25 after working on the farm for 16 years.
"They will just be coming out for exercise," Alessi said. "They've got there gold watch, they earned it."
Fosterfields Living Historical Farm, the first designated living history farm in New Jersey, is set in the year 1881.
Funds to purchase the all-black stallions were made available via Morristown's Whole Foods. They donated five percent of their proceeds during their opening day last year.
"With a focus on educational programing, supporting this partnership is a perfect endeavor," said Milena Carabello, Marketing Team Leader at Morristown's Whole Foods.
Those looking to meet the new horses before the farm officially opens for the spring can do so on Sunday Feb. 7 at "A Winter's Day On The Farm."
