BAYONNE -- Ten people have been displaced by a fire that destroyed one Avenue E home and caused at least some damage to another home, according to city officials.
The city Fire and Police departments responded to a fire at 667 Ave. E near 41st Street at around 10:30 a.m., police said. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find much of the three-story building in flames, said Bayonne Fire Chief Greg Rogers.
The fire was controlled by noon, according to police.
Rogers said the blaze also damaged 665 Ave. E, the building next to 667 Ave. E, and that five people from each building have been displaced.
The building at 667 Ave. E sustained "extensive damage," including a collapsed roof, the fire chief said. Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis said the damage was so significant that the building will have to be demolished.
It hasn't been determined whether 665 Ave. E is structurally sound, Davis said.
Besides two firefighters who sustained injuries that appeared to be minor, no one was hurt in the blaze, Rogers said. One firefighter suffered an "impact injury above the eye," while the other firefighter suffered minor burns to the wrist, neck and ears, the fire chief said.
Rogers said both firefighters were taken to the hospital but have since been released.
The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation, he said.
