NEW BRUNSWICK -- A man reportedly struck a woman affiliated with Rutgers University in the face early Wednesday morning, and then fled, according to a statement from Rutgers police.

Police say they are still looking for the suspect.

The incident, police said, occurred at around 3 a.m. in the area of Van Dyke Hall on the College Avenue Campus.

According to officials, the woman told police that after she was struck, she "yelled for assistance, which alerted nearby witnesses." She said the perpetrator "then fled on foot towards Seminary Place."

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, officials said.

Police said a description of the suspect was limited at this time.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Rutgers Police Department Detective Bureau at (848) 932-8025.

Officials in the statement reminded that the Rutgers University Police Department provides escorts to students, faculty, and staff upon request, and will offer transportation to vehicles, campus residences, or the university's mass transit system.

To request a security escort, contact the police communications center at (732) 932-7211.
